Inspiration
The “Opera of the puppets” is a particular type of puppets theatre that was firmly established in Sicily between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Sicilian puppets distinguish from the others essentially for their peculiar manoeuvre mechanic and for their repertory, made up almost entirely of chivarlic narratives, largely derived from novels and poems of the Carolingian cycle. In Sicily exists two different traditions, or “styles”, of Opera of the puppets: Palermo’s and Catania’s.
The most represented opera is Ludovico Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso”, in which Rinaldo, one of the 12 paladins of France that constituted the guard chosen by the emperor Charlemagne, becomes his cousin Orlando’s love rival, they compete for the beautiful Angelica.
